Lines In Holoplankton

홀로플랑크톤은 태어나서 죽을 때까지 부유동물로 사는 생물을 뜻하는 단어이다. 어느 날 우연히 19세기 독일의 생물학자 에른스트 헤켈의 '자연의 예술 형태' 저서 속 방산충(동물성 플랑크톤의 일종) 세밀화를 보게 된 후, 미세 생물의 아름다움에 깊은 끌림을 느끼고 홀로플랑크톤이 가진 곡선에 대해 탐구하게 되었다.

작업은 홀로플랑크톤의 사진을 수집하고, 관찰한 뒤 그것을 나의 심상 속에서 다시 그려내는 과정을 거쳤다. 어느 정확한 형태를 재현하는 것이 아니라, 무수히 많은 이미지를 통해 작고 단순하지만 동시에 놀라울 정도로 복잡한 구조를 띄기도 하는 미세 생물의 선에 집중했다. 그들이 가진 외곽선, 때로는 장기를 이루는 내부의 선들을 관찰하고 그것들을 패턴화하여 재창조했다. 어두운 바다 위를 신비롭게 떠다니는 플랑크톤의 이미지를 선화에 담아내기 위해, 그림은 검은 종이 위에 형광 잉크와 금색 잉크로 리소 프린팅했다. 

Holoplankton refers to organisms that spend their entire life cycle as plankton, remaining in a drifting state from birth to death. One day, I happened to encounter the detailed illustrations of radiolarians (a type of zooplankton) in Ernst Haeckel’s Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), a book by the 19th-century German biologist. Captivated by the beauty of these microscopic organisms, I began exploring the delicate curves and structures found within holoplankton.

The process began by collecting and observing images of holoplankton, then reinterpreting them through my own imagination. Rather than reproducing any specific organism, I focused on the lines and structures of these microscopic beings, which appear small and simple at first glance yet reveal astonishingly complex forms. I studied their outer contours as well as the internal lines that form their organs, transforming these observations into patterns and reconstructing them through my own visual language.

To capture the mysterious image of plankton drifting through the dark depths of the ocean, the illustrations were lithographically printed on black paper using fluorescent and gold inks, emphasizing the ethereal qualities of their delicate forms.
